Tavush fortress

Tavush
X c.

Berd town received its name from the Tavush fortress, and was located on the shores of the Tavush River. Kirakos Gandzaketsi mentioned Berd having an administrative center by the name of Volorut. During the mongol invasions the population scattered and the city was deserted. During the Persian and Turkish invasions it was once again destroyed and the inhabitants slaughtered, the remaining people stayed and established Berd city at its present location.

Bishop Hovhannes (teacher of Kirakos Gandzaketsi) was working in the Tavush fortress.

At the park of the fortress tombs with large clay vessels, iron weapons, glass necklacess and other such items dating back to 5-4th B.C. were discovered. The middle-fort and the lower parts of the two walls were preserved.
