The Shatin village is situated in the Vayots Dzor district, at the junction of the Yeghegis and Selim Rivers. Close to four kms to the east is Shatinvank (Shatin’s monastery) complex. According to Orbelyan it was established in 929. The present church of St.Sion, which stands in the center of the monastery, was built in 1655 by Mahtesi Hakob. Shatin was one of the largest religious and cultural centers in the mid-century Syunik, where multiple manuscripts were reproduced. It had a strong economy because of its connections with Goghtan province, particularly with Djugha.
The monastery had a mill, a canal, and a bridge built in 1666 on the River Yeghegis.
